The SAP and Return-to-Duty Process

Regain Your Career: Complete DOT Return-to-Duty Process

If you failed or refused a DOT drug or alcohol test, you are required to complete the return-to-duty process with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) before returning to a DOT safety-sensitive position. This process ensures public safety and compliance with DOT regulations.

How Does the SAP Process Work?

1. Initial Evaluation

  • Complete a virtual assessment with your SAP.
  • Includes an interview style evaluation to understand your unique circumstances as well as utilization of clinical assessment questionnaires.
  • Based on this assessment, your SAP will recommend an individualized education and/or treatment plan.

2. Education and Treatment Program

  • Complete the education or treatment program as required by the DOT.
  • Important: Costs for these services are paid directly to the treatment provider and are not included in our fees.
  • We do not receive compensation from treatment programs, testing sites, or third-party administrators.

3. Follow-Up Evaluation and SAP Completion

  • After completing your treatment or education program, schedule your final virtual evaluation with your SAP.
  • Your SAP will verify compliance and send a report of successful completion to your employer (or future employer) and update the FMCSA Clearinghouse (for CDL holders)

4. Return to Duty and Follow-up Testing

  • An observed return-to-duty drug test must be ordered by an employer and a negative test result is required to proceed.
  • Your SAP will issue a confidential drug testing schedule to your employer (or future employer) to ensure compliance for a minimum of 1 year, per DOT.
